Showtime's Penny Dreadful Adapting More Than One Book??

Showtime's Penny Dreadful has been deemed to be one of the most interesting bookish shows to have ever graced the television screen.  Electric Lit goes on to further delve into just how the show manages to adapt multiple books at one time.   Has any other show on television or film had the ability to adapt nearly five different literary works at one time?  Electric Lit goes on to add that not all of the show's characters have been taken from books, the basis for the show is formed from books, such as Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula and in some certain aspects, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and Varney the Vampire.
