Last night I finally finished an ARC copy of Gail Godwin's upcoming novel Flora. Flora will be released May 7, 2013. Ten year old Helen loses her best friend and caregiver, her grandmother. Helen's father is a high school principal who travels out-of-town during the summer to work on war materials. Helen's father asks Helen's distant cousin Flora to come and stay with her for the duration of the summer. The story spans just the summer months while Helen's father is out-of-town. This is a deeply moving story about companionship, love and loss.
Helen tells this story as an adult looking back at the summer so long ago with Flora. This was a good story, slow to move in my opinion. If you are looking for something deep, this is it for you. If you are looking for something action packed and full of adventure, I'd recommend passing this one over.
